There are some traditional applique blocks that grab my attention and don’t let go. The block I’m sharing today is one of those. I found it on Connecting Threads and it’s called Bits of Blue and Gray. It was created by Debbie Beaves.
What sets this one apart is the pieced background. It’s a clever way to add interest without detracting from the impact of the oak leaf and reel shapes.
And notice that this maker used some active prints in a medium scale and it totally works. You don’t have to limit yourself to tiny prints for applique.

Autumn would be a good time to pull some tans, browns and blues, don’t you think? And blocks like this would be a time to use your HQ Stitch to its full advantage for machine applique! Stay tuned!
