I have started six new quilts in the past few weeks. Is it because I have finished all of my previous projects? Is it because I don’t have a UFO to my name?

No, it is not.

Maybe it’s that my studio is spotless, my stash is organized and my holiday preparations are gloriously complete.

‘Fraid not.

Then why, oh why, have I started all these new quilts? It’s a question worth asking.

I wonder if I am alone in this:

Beginning new quilts when I’m already drowning in quilts undone.

I think I’m likely in good company. If your reasons are similar to mine, some of these will ring a bell.

I get excited about ideas. I love ideas! I constantly have ideas. Ideas are what makes me tick.

I don’t want to wait to pursue an idea. I want to explore it now. And the world we live in makes everything seem like now is always the best time. (I think that’s a falsehood but that’s a topic for a different kind of expert.)

I crave the excitement of starting a new project. My interest level is never greater than at the beginning, when all the what-if-I-do-this and what-if-I-do-that questions are ripe to bursting and just begging to be answered.

That bloom has faded from all of my current projects and I’m into the less interesting part of finishing up. Poor old projects. 😔

And there’s more bad news.

If I were to add in all of the starts from, say, September forward, there would be many more. Even I am starting to see how ridiculous this is.

What is the answer to this dilemma?

If you have thoughts, whether you’re in this boat with me or not, I’d love to hear them.

Why is the lure of the new project so irresistible?
