I’ve been making simple Log Cabin quilt blocks and I’m having a great time imaging where the design could go. I’m using a free pattern from Quilter’s World in a mystery sampler called Awash with Color, Block 1.

I’m starting with lights so that my last addition is darks. I’m sewing from my stash and the only requirement for the fabrics is that they’re happy. I want this to be a light-hearted color scheme.

For each round of darks, I’m using two logs from the same fabric. But for the lights, every log can be different. The first block, above, felt a little too stiff and that’s why I’m scrapping it up on the light side of the blocks.

Each time I have enough blocks to form a square, I take a picture. It gives me a goal and the picture helps me see if I need to lighten up the colors or spread fabrics around or make other changes.

Once you have nine blocks it starts to become a lot of fun! You can try out the traditional Log Cabin settings. Above is Sunshine and Shadow.

This one is called Fields & Furrows, or just Straight Furrows. These changes happen by simply rotating the blocks. Pretty amazing, right?

I’m not sure what this one is called, and it looks better with more blocks. But I do like it a lot!

I’m up to 13 blocks now and hope to hit 16 before day’s end. I’ll have more blocks to show you soon, and once the top is complete, I’m going to quilt it on the HQ Capri stationary longarm. I can hardly wait!
