I hope you’re making use of Handi Quilter’s Minute Motifs. These short one-minute videos show how to quilt something delightful each time. When I watch I get so excited, you can bet that I’m on my HQ Stitch 710 within a few minutes.

Check out these Curly Stars.

I like to have two fat quarters layered with batting and ready to quilt at all times. I use fabrics that I don’t think I’ll ever want to put into a quilt, like something I got at a garage sale or a guild freebie table.

If the print is especially busy, I might use the wrong side as the top because I want to be able to see the practice quilting.

The wrong side will help me see my practice quilting more easily.

I baste the layers together with spray, but I go outdoors to mist them because I don’t want to cover my floors and furniture, and spray baste tends to drift and make things sticky.

I use basting spray outdoors so my house doesn’t get sticky.

I use leftover batting from a big garbage bag I keep in the closet.

Leftover batting comes in handy for practice.

My sandwich is ready to go.

When I’m going to machine quilt, I warm up first. I’ve been using the same warm-up sandwich for a long time. It’s covered with quilting, not all that pretty.

My warm-up sandwich

But using it helps me not to fret about ugly stitches when I’m very cold. If I go for too long between machine quilting sessions, my muscles and my brain seem to get stiff—they practically forget how to make smooth moves and lovely curvy shapes. Warming up really helps.

So get your sandwich all ready to go, and next time a new Minute Motif from Handi Quilter appears, you’ll be prepared to practice!
